How to Save Seeds for Next Year’s Garden
Saving seeds from your garden is an easy way to prepare for next year and save money.
1. Pick the Right Plants
Choose heirloom or open-pollinated plants like tomatoes and beans.
Avoid hybrids, as they may not grow true to the parent plant.
2. Let Seeds Mature
Wait for fruits to ripen or pods/flowers to dry on the plant before collecting.
3. Harvest the Seeds
Tomatoes: Scoop seeds, soak in water for 2 days, then rinse and dry.
Peppers, Beans, Peas: Shake seeds from dried fruits or pods.
Flowers: Collect seeds from dried flower heads.
4. Dry the Seeds
Spread seeds on paper towels and leave them to dry for 1-2 weeks.
5. Store and Label
Place seeds in envelopes or jars, label with the plant type and date, and store in a cool, dry place.
