How to Save Seeds for Next Year’s Garden

Saving seeds from your garden is an easy way to prepare for next year and save money.

1. Pick the Right Plants

  • Choose heirloom or open-pollinated plants like tomatoes and beans.

  • Avoid hybrids, as they may not grow true to the parent plant.

2. Let Seeds Mature

  • Wait for fruits to ripen or pods/flowers to dry on the plant before collecting.

3. Harvest the Seeds

  • Tomatoes: Scoop seeds, soak in water for 2 days, then rinse and dry.

  • Peppers, Beans, Peas: Shake seeds from dried fruits or pods.

  • Flowers: Collect seeds from dried flower heads.

4. Dry the Seeds

  • Spread seeds on paper towels and leave them to dry for 1-2 weeks.

5. Store and Label

  • Place seeds in envelopes or jars, label with the plant type and date, and store in a cool, dry place.
