Starting your sewing journey? Here are some simple and fun DIY projects that are perfect for beginners.

1. Tote Bag

  • Cut Fabric: Cut two rectangles (16x18 inches) for the bag and two strips (4x22 inches) for the straps.

  • Sew the Bag: Stitch the rectangles together on three sides, leaving the top open.

  • Hem the Top: Fold the top edge twice and sew it down.

  • Make the Straps: Sew the strips into tubes, turn them right-side out, and press flat.

  • Attach Straps: Sew the straps onto the top of the bag.

2. Envelope Pillow Covers

  • Cut Fabric: Cut one piece for the front and two for the back, allowing for overlap.

  • Hem Back Pieces: Hem one edge of each back piece.

  • Assemble: Lay the front piece face up, and overlap the back pieces face down.

  • Sew Edges: Stitch all around the edges.

  • Finish: Turn right-side out and insert your pillow.

3. Fabric Coasters

  • Cut Squares: Cut two fabric squares and one felt or batting square (4x4 inches).

  • Layer Pieces: Stack them with batting in the middle.

  • Sew Around: Stitch around the edges, leaving a small gap.

  • Turn Out: Turn the coaster right-side out.

  • Finish: Sew the opening closed.

4. Drawstring Bag

  • Cut Fabric: Cut two rectangles to your desired size.

  • Sew Sides and Bottom: Stitch the sides and bottom, leaving the top open.

  • Make a Casing: Fold the top edge twice and sew to create a casing for the drawstring.

  • Thread Drawstring: Thread ribbon or cord through the casing.

  • Tie Ends: Knot the drawstring ends.

5. Headband

  • Cut Fabric: Cut a strip (4x20 inches) of fabric.

  • Sew Long Edge: Fold the strip lengthwise and sew along the long edge.

  • Turn Right-Side Out: Turn the tube right-side out.

  • Press and Finish: Press flat, tuck in raw ends, and sew them closed.

  • Tie or Loop: Tie around your head or sew into a loop.
