How to Create a Butterfly Garden
With a bit of planning and care, you’ll be on your way to enjoying a vibrant garden that supports the lives of these essential pollinators.
1. Find a Sunny Spot
Choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight.
Avoid windy areas—calm spaces are better for butterflies.
2. Pick the Right Plants
For Nectar: Plant flowers like coneflowers, butterfly bush, and lantana.
For Caterpillars: Add plants like milkweed (monarchs), dill (swallowtails), and willow.
3. Add Shelter and Water
Include small shrubs or rocks for butterflies to hide and rest.
Make a shallow water dish with sand or pebbles so butterflies can drink.
4. Go Organic
Skip the pesticides—they harm butterflies.
Try natural pest control like ladybugs or companion planting.
5. Maintain and Watch
Trim flowers to keep them blooming.
Water early morning or evening, and enjoy your butterfly visitors!
