How to Create a Butterfly Garden

With a bit of planning and care, you’ll be on your way to enjoying a vibrant garden that supports the lives of these essential pollinators.

1. Find a Sunny Spot

  • Choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight.

  • Avoid windy areas—calm spaces are better for butterflies.

2. Pick the Right Plants

  • For Nectar: Plant flowers like coneflowers, butterfly bush, and lantana.

  • For Caterpillars: Add plants like milkweed (monarchs), dill (swallowtails), and willow.

3. Add Shelter and Water

  • Include small shrubs or rocks for butterflies to hide and rest.

  • Make a shallow water dish with sand or pebbles so butterflies can drink.

4. Go Organic

  • Skip the pesticides—they harm butterflies.

  • Try natural pest control like ladybugs or companion planting.

5. Maintain and Watch

  • Trim flowers to keep them blooming.

  • Water early morning or evening, and enjoy your butterfly visitors!

"Nature always wears the colors of the spirit."

– Ralph Waldo Emerson
