How to Make Your Own Compost at Home
Composting is a simple way to reduce waste and create rich soil for your garden.
1. Set Up a Compost Bin
Get a compost bin or make one from a plastic container with holes for air.
Place it in your yard or on a balcony, somewhere convenient and well-drained.
2. Collect Your Materials
Green materials: Fruit scraps, veggie peels, coffee grounds, grass clippings.
Brown materials: Dry leaves, cardboard, newspaper, twigs.
Aim for a 2:1 ratio of brown to green materials.
3. Start Layering
Put a layer of brown materials on the bottom.
Add a layer of green, then keep alternating layers.
4. Water and Turn
Keep the pile moist, like a damp sponge.
Turn the pile every week to mix it and help it break down faster.
5. Use Your Compost
In a few months, your compost will be dark and crumbly.
Use it in your garden or for houseplants to enrich the soil.
