Starting Plants from Cuttings

Propagating plants from cuttings is an easy and affordable way to multiply your garden favorites.

1. Pick a Healthy Plant

  • Choose a strong, healthy plant for your cutting.

  • Great choices include herbs like basil or houseplants like pothos.

2. Take a Cutting

  • Cut a 4-6 inch piece of stem just below a leaf node.

  • Remove lower leaves, keeping a few at the top.

3. Plant the Cutting

  • Stick the cutting into moist, well-draining soil.

  • Use rooting hormone if desired to speed up root growth.

4. Cover and Place in Indirect Light

  • Cover the pot with a plastic bag to keep it humid.

  • Place the pot in bright, indirect light.

5. Water and Wait

  • Keep the soil moist.

  • In a few weeks, check for roots and transplant once they develop.
